Hand warmer project
Winter sports are always a joy to watch. The only issue being that its winter, and it gets a bit chilly outside. Our chemistry classes were tasked with making a cost effective and efficient hand warmer to be sold at snack shacks and the students store. Through the building period we learned about how different salts change the temperature of water. We also learned how to calculate the amount of energy created during a chemical reaction. The enthalpy change and the calorimeter constant. Through many trials each individual group chose a salt that they wanted to have in their hand warmer. We then were given a fabrication period to create the hand warmer we envisioned in our head and see if it would effectively work. We then created a presentation and presented how are hand warmer came to be and why you should invest in it. This project was a lot of fun. Our group came upon a few obstacles though. We had a bit of trouble using the calculations correctly to find the data needed for our hand warmer. In time though we were able to fix it and collect the data we needed. We also decided to change our salt halfway through the project. This just gave us a bit of a time crunch, but we came out just fine. Our group did a very good job communicating. We also created a very effective presentation that included data and everything you needed to know about our hand warmer.
